Republic Type VI Countermarked 4 Reales (1848) VF, San Jose mint, KM51.2 (unlisted date). Countermark over a US Half Dollar 1838. Base coin Fine and unflawed, countermark VF with even wear and several instances of light corrosion on both sides. Authorized by edict of January 27, 1847 which widened the scope of the countermarking operation - originally authorized by decree of October 15, 1846 and targeted on acceptable quality cob issues -  to any coins of acceptable fineness and weight which were little known to the public. The present example was likely among the first of these "unknown" issues that were revalidated since struck before the new punches with the correct "1847" date were prepared (the counterstamp shows the 1846 date). Very rare type with five other examples known with a US half dollar host coin, a wholesome and most attractive coin with an important pedigree.
