    Description

Impressive 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar With Counterstamp
    (U.S. Eagle) / Harpers / Ferry /1809
Flintlock Musket Marking, Likely Unique on Any Coin

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1 Uncertified. Unlisted in either the Brunk or Rulau references, to our knowledge this exact counterstamp has not been seen on any other coin, much less another 1795 Flowing Hair dollar. It is found, however, on original flintlock muskets made at Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia. A total of 70,000 Model 1795 Muskets were produced at Harpers Ferry between 1800 and 1816. Stamping dies were employed for marking the gun locks, among them single line punches for HARPERS / FERRY/ 1809 and a separate punch for the federal-style eagle with US within the shield.

This historically significant dollar is quite a find for flintlock musket enthusiasts, early dollar collectors, as well as collectors of counterstamps. Flowing Hair dollars with counterstamps of any kind are rare and seldom available. This one is original and pleasing with old-silver, gray toning on smooth surfaces. The counterstamp is boldly applied and weak only at the H of HARPERS.
