Description

1803(?) Draped Bust Large Cent, VOTE THE LAND / FREE, Nearly Slick Both Sides; VF Counterstamp. Brunk V-110, Rulau HT-833. Prepared circular punch. More than 60 examples survive. Despite a relatively large number of survivors, this is one of the most important political counterstamps known--as well as one of the most interesting. The National Reform Party impressed its slogan primarily on 1830-1840s large cents, while it lobbied Congress for free homesteads in the West. Ellis Smalley was a Plainfield, New Jersey blacksmith and political activist who made the die, which remains on display at the Kansas Historical Society. This is an unexpected example punched on a nearly slick, early Draped Bust type. The obverse shows evidence of a double impression.
Ex: Hallenbeck; a gift from George Dillingham 7/25/1980.
