Three Classic Counterstamped Coins, Ex: John J. Ford Jr. Collection. This is an excellent group of three "classic" counterstamps, all in their original NGC holders from the John J. Ford Jr. Collection. (1829-30) H. SCHOONMAKER Bar Punch Rulau E-NY-786, Brunk S-196 on a 1783 Mo Two Reales. Good 4 Host Coin, XF Counterstamp. Misidentified and misattributed in the Ford sale, and in the supporting references. Identified as W.H. SCHOONMAKER, a New York dealer in arms, pistols, rifles, militaria, and silverplated fancy goods, but this is incorrect. The counterstamp is that of H. SCHOONMAKER, a Bergen County, New Jersey silversmith who used the identical bar punch to hallmark his coin silver teaspoons and other silver creations. He is a rare New Jersey maker, and we are aware of just two coins that carry his hallmark -- an 1806 quarter, and this 1783 two reales piece. Listed as R.9 in the Rulau reference. (1855-57) ADMIT / TO / WOOD'S / MINSTRELS / 444 BdWAY/ NY, Rulau NY-964b, Brunk W-796 on a 1788 Two Reales. About Good 3 Host Coin, VF Counterstamp. The successor to Christy and Woods Minstrels. Famous for Ethiopian minstrelsy. (1876) PARISIAN / VARIETIES / 16. St & B'WAY. N.Y. Rulau NY-NY-230 on an 1875 Seated Half. XF40 Host Coin, XF Counterstamp. An attractive and originally toned example, well-struck with curved line punches for the countermark. Parisian Varieties was unsuccessful with a traditional repertoire, and soon became a burlesque house.
