Thug Life — An Iconic Note from Bitcoin’s Pre-Mainstream Era
Kialara Uncertified Loaded (Unredeemed) "Thug Life" Art Note
0.23 Bitcoin (BTC) 2016 UNC, Ahonen Unllisted. Issue: 10.
Signed: Maxfield 2016. Firstbits 1NHFaATG. Encased in clear acrylic
holder, secured with corner screws and sealed by tamper-evident
holograms. Though not issued under the formal Kialara banner, Thug
Life stands as a consequential work within Max Mellenbruch's
artistic evolution. The edition consists of ten $100 Federal
Reserve Notes dated 2009-the year Bitcoin's genesis block was
mined-with sequential serial numbers ending 01 through 10. Each
note presents Benjamin Franklin fitted with "Thug Life"
sunglasses, an unmistakable reference to the meme culture of the
1990s hip-hop era. The reverse bears a Bitcoin emblem and the
inscription: "This note holds 0.23 bitcoins; the equivalent of $100
USD on January 3rd, 2016 - the 7th anniversary of the Bitcoin
Blockchain," articulating the work's monetary proposition.By aligning a fixed denomination of U.S. currency with a defined allocation of Bitcoin, the piece draws a deliberate contrast between traditional fiat structure and digitally enforced scarcity. At once culturally charged and economically pointed, the edition reflects the assertive, independent spirit that has long characterized the Bitcoin movement. With only ten produced and examples tightly held, this represents the first specimen we have witnessed offered at a public auction. We are particularly privileged to present this foundational and widely regarded work of Bitcoin art in celebration of its tenth anniversary, and to showcase it at the Bitcoin Conference 2026 in Las Vegas.
