After studying law at the University of Havana, he became active in radical politics and, in 1953, led the failed Moncada Barracks attack against dictator Fulgencio Batista. Imprisoned and later exiled, he regrouped in Mexico with allies like Che Guevara, returning to Cuba to launch a guerrilla war. In 1959, Castro's forces toppled Batista, beginning decades of socialist rule. His government nationalized industries, carried out land reforms, and aligned with the Soviet Union, bringing Cuba into direct conflict with the United States during events like the Bay of Pigs invasion (1961) and the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). Castro remained in power for nearly five decades, admired by supporters for expanding healthcare and education but criticized for suppressing freedoms. He stepped down in 2008, and upon his death in 2016, he left behind a deeply divided legacy-revered revolutionary to some, authoritarian ruler to others.
