Description
Harvey’s Resort Hotel began its numismatic collections in 1960 under the direction of owner Harvey A. Gross. The collection was primarily directed toward the acquisition of coins and more specifically silver dollars. In 1964 as silver dollars disappeared, Harvey’s began to extend its collections into other areas. Upon the death of Mr. Gross in 1983, the scope of the collection was narrowed to include items related to gaming and to the State of Nevada. When the incredible collection of Nevada nationals formed by Frank Rosa, Jr. became available, Harvey’s acquired it and continued to expand it. Although Harvey’s continued to acquire notes as they became available, the numismatic community owes a debt to Rosa for his undying dedication to finding Nevada national currency even before it was deemed popular among collectors.
Throughout this section of the sale we have used a particular convention in determining "types" of notes. This is based on the same convention used to assemble the collection. Blue seal notes with plain backs have been divided into three types:
Third Charter, Plain Back, Blue Seal,"P;"
Third Charter, Plain Back, Blue Seal, D#’s (two different serial numbers); and,
Third Charter, Plain Back, Blue Seal, S#’s (two identical serial numbers).
This collection was formed considering these as separate types of notes, each belonging to a separate era of issue. Different cashier and president signatures are also considered as separate issues for purposes of counting the number of notes known. This cataloger believes that as national currency notes are studied, these differences will provide some of the keys to understanding each bank's issues.
The notes in this sale have been listed in the order of their bank charter numbers.

Perhaps the new "King" of Nevada nationals and certainly one of America’s premier notes, this extremely rare and desirable note commands the attention of the entire collecting community. The First National Bank of Winnemucca, founded in 1886, served a small community that existed on mining and ranching. On Sept.19, 1900 three men entered the bank and requested an unauthorized withdrawal of $33,000. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (Harry Longabaugh) have long been credited with this heist, but extensive historical research indicates they were not the robbers. The bank would probably have been forgotten by history had it not been for these men and for a single piece of Nevada national currency that survived. In the 1960s, a single Brown Back note on the bank was discovered and subsequently sold to Amon Carter, one of the few collectors of currency at that time. The note was later sold to Robert Medlar of San Antonio who impounded it in his collection and considered it as the crown jewel. When Medlar decided to dispose of the collection, he honored a promise as the curator of Harvey’s and sold the note to them. This transaction created numerous disappointed collectors who eagerly sought this elusive note. Since the mid-1980s when the note was acquired, it has been the centerpiece of one of the greatest collections of Nevada nationals ever assembled. To the best of our knowledge, this note has never seen the floor of a public auction, and its offering in this sale will provide collectors with a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a formidable piece of United States and Nevada numismatic history.
