Description
Historic 1861 $5 Demand Note, Fr-1
1861 $5 Demand Note, Fr-1, VG. Authorized by the Congressional Acts of July 17 and August 5, 1861 and issued in $5, $10, and $20 denominations, these early "greenbacks" were the first official United States currency. This well worn but defect-free example declares "The United States of America promises to pay to the bearer Five Dollars on demand, payable by the Assistant Treasurer of the United States at New York (City)", one of five locations at which they were "receivable in payment for all public dues." A rare and historic issue.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# ANGV, PCGS# 10001, GSID# 11692)
