Description

Republic gold "Plain Edge" Medallic 5 Pounds 1966 MS68 PCGS, Paris mint, KMX-M5.2, cf. Fr-6a (two versions not differentiated). Obv. Bust of Makarios III left, wearing klobuk. Rev. Stylized double eagle facing, holding scepter in each talon; crown above. Struck to honor Archbishop Makarios III, the first president of the Cyriot Republic, this impressive medallic issue is exceedingly lustrous and impeccable, with a high relief portrait and visually stunning appeal. A plain edge and a larger bust that breaks the obverse legend set the present example apart from its more common (though still rare in its own right) version, which features a reeded edge and unbroken obverse legend. Additionally, the present specimen is from an emission of just 200 pieces, all of which were serially numbered, with this example being #141/200. We have offered this version only once before (where it was misdescribed as KM-XM5.1); that coin, an NGC MS64, realized a hammer of $8,500 in our 2016 CICF auction (sale 3046, lot 29794).
