Description

Christian VII gold 12 Mark (Ducat Courant) 1781-CHL MS65 NGC, Altona mint, KM641.1, Hede-4A, Fr-281. Mintmaster: Didrik Christian Lyng. Engraver: Johan Henrik Wolff. A generally elusive series mainly minted in Altona, which at the time was a part of the Danish Kingdom, until 1864 when it came to be under Prussian authority; now it is a part of the Hamburg city state in Germany. Heritage has only handled a few examples total from the series and this is the finer of only two problem-free representatives of this first-year date certified by NGC. The present piece is a beautiful Gem specimen; canary yellow tone, well-preserved surfaces saturated with mint luster, and a sharp presentation despite some areas of localized softness in the design. A sole "Top Pop" selection, likely to place in an esteemed cabinet of Danish numismatic excellence.
