Description

Frederik VI Speciedaler 1819IFF, Altona mint, D-72, KM693, 28.87g, AU55 NGC. Well struck and lightly worn with slight haymarking on the obverse. The first Danish virole pleine struck Rigsdaler Species. Denmark had last struck a Speciedaler in 1808. In 1814, Denmark lost her long time territory of Norway to Sweden. However, when Speciedaler mintage resumed in 1819 the old Denmark, Sweden and Norway shield was utilized. Naturally, Sweden was not amused immediately protesting the use of the rampant Norwegian lion in the Danish shield. The reverse shield was completely redesigned removing the offending reference to Norway on the 1820 mintage of the Speciedaler. It is very possible, even likely, that some/most of the 1819 mintage was recalled and melted. This extremely rare one year type resulted. Certainly Denmark's rarest/most important crown of the Nineteenth Century.
