    1825 Rathbone & Fitch Token, VF35
Rulau E-NY-654C, New York, New York

1825 New York, New York, Rathbone & Fitch, Castle Garden, R. E-NY-654C, High R.6, VF35 NGC. Silvered brass, plain edge. B.W. Haines 199. Nearly full silvering remains on this lightly worn but highly important Castle Garden token. NGC analyzed the composition showing this piece is approximately 62% copper, 21% tin, and 16% lead. Jonathan Rathbone and Francis B. Fitch operated Castle Garden during the mid- to late-1820s. The property known as Castle Garden was previously a military post during the War of 1812 known as Castle Clinton with a history that dates to the beginning of construction about 1807. Its later history included use as an emigration depot and as an aquarium. Although the structure has changed over the decades, it still exists today as the Castle Clinton National Monument.
