    Description

    (1825) J. Randel, Jr. Token, MS62 Brown
Likely the Finest Known Rulau E-DEL-2

(1825) New Castle County, Delaware, J. Randel, Jr., R. E-DEL-2, R.8, MS62 Brown NGC. Copper, plain edge. An extraordinary example of the extremely rare E-DEL-2 variety, this piece is undoubtedly the finest known. Fully lustrous light orange surfaces exhibit delicate blue toning that creates outstanding eye appeal. The C. & D. Canal that was completed in 1829 was operated privately until 1919 when the U.S. government bought the waterway that still operates today in a greatly expanded form. John Randel, Jr. served as the chief engineer for the canal company from 1823 to 1825. The story of Randel and his lawsuits makes fascinating reading. He eventually received $226,000 from the canal company in 1834.
Ex: David Schenkman; Presidential Coin (6/1986), lot 23; Donald G. Partrick.
