    (1829-33) Augusta, Georgia, I. Gilbert, Low-315, HT-110, R. E-GA-1, R.7--Reverse Damage--NGC Details. AU. Brass, plain edge. Gilbert was apparently Israel Gilbert, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, who was born about 1796 and died at Augusta, Georgia, in 1836. In 1825, Gilbert became the sole proprietor of a business offering saddlery and other merchandise.

    Rulau lists two varieties of this token, HT-110 and HT-110A. Both are recorded as R.7. They were previously recorded as pre-Hard Times token issues, and were moved to the Hard Times listings in the fourth edition of the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens, 1700-1900 where they carry a value of $4,000 in XF. However, these tokens are not listed in A Guide Book of Hard Times Tokens, suggesting that they remain in the pre-Hard Times era per that reference. The reverse damage mentioned on the holder is mostly inconsequential on this piece that exhibits light yellow and areas of pale blue and chocolate-brown. Shallow digs at the lower reverse also affect the obverse. The I. Gilbert tokens are listed in copper and brass, with one example described as "fire-gilt copper." This piece is worthy of careful examination as it may be a similar gilt copper example, rather than brass.
