Undated Waterbury House Token, MS62
New Haven, Connecticut, Rulau E-CONN-27
Undated New Haven, Connecticut, Waterbury House, R. E-CONN-27,
R.7, MS62 NGC. Brass, plain edge. There was considerable
controversy regarding the issuing period of the Waterbury House
tokens for many decades. At one time, George and Melvin Fuld dated
these pieces to the 1850s. The late Steve Tanenbaum felt they dated
much earlier to the pre-Hard Times era and Russ Rulau agreed with
that assessment. The identification of N.H. as New Haven dates to
1863 in the Bangs, Merwin catalog of the Haines Collection. Rulau
suggests that the small WBD on this token is the signature of the
Waterbury, Connecticut die-sinker William B. Dunbar who was born in
Connecticut in 1811. He is identified in the 1850 census as a
"cutter." This lovely light-yellow example has excellent eye appeal
with smooth surfaces and hints of gold toning. It is likely the
finest known of just five or six that survive. Auction appearances
are infrequent and always in lower grades than this piece that is
the first example we have handled. These tokens are listed on page
18 of the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900
where a value of $1,900 is recorded for the VF grade.Ex: Steinberg Collection (Stack's, 10/1989), lot 398; Donald G. Partrick.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.View More Testimonials
