    Description

    Rare JR-5 1796 Dime, AU55

1796 10C AU55 PCGS. JR-5, R.5. JR-5 is one of the two 1796 dime varieties to carry an R.5 rarity rating, and it is unusual in anything approaching the quality of the current coin. This piece, then graded AU50, was cited in the 1984 JR reference (where it served as the plate coin) as the finest the authors had seen, and it remains perhaps the finest example of the variety available.
It is interesting to note that this is both a relatively late die state, as evidenced by the vertical die crack that bisects the obverse between 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock, and a substantially prooflike coin, quite possibly also one of the earlier strikes from this die pair. In retrospect, the scarcity of the variety is quite understandable due to the obviously short die life. This is a well-struck coin, with only a small area of bluntness on the highest points of the eagle's chest and leg, as always. A good deal of both luster and reflectivity remain under deep, iridescent toning. Wear is at an absolute minimum, and a few small pinscratches do not detract from the abundant appeal.
