VF Details 1796 Dime
Important "No Cud" JR-1 Die State

1796 10C --Corroded, Tooled--ANACS. VF20 Details. JR-1, R.3. An early die state (as indicated on the insert) without the cud at star 1 ("No Cud" is also indicated on the holder). The still-standard reference to the series, Early United States Dimes 1796-1837, states "all specimens seen have die cud at S1 on obverse which increases in size until S1 obliterated." This piece is an exception, and was presumably among the first few dimes strike. In its A.N.R. appearance, that cataloger noted only one other JR-1 was known without the star 1 cud, the high-grade Jimmy Hayes-Whitney example sold in 1999.
Silver-gray surfaces display whispers of purple color, especially on the reverse, and some micro porosity, again mostly on the reverse. A few minute contact and tooling marks are noted on both sides.
