    Description

    1796 JR-1 Dime, Near-Mint
    Smooth and Coruscating

1796 10C JR-1, R.3, AU58 PCGS. The cud below star 1 identifies JR-1 at arm's length. The clash marks near LIBERTY are also associated with the variety. This briefly circulated representative is generally cream-gray, although the margins offer occasional gunmetal-blue toning. The dies are lightly rusted but no marks are remotely consequential. 1796 was the first year of dime production at the fledgling U.S. Mint, although half dimes were coined there in both 1794 and 1795. Thus, there are no Flowing Hair dimes, and the Draped Bust, Small Eagle type was the first for the denomination. It lasted two years before the reverse was replaced by the Heraldic Eagle design. (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38742, Base PCGS# 4461)
