Description

1796 JR-2 Dime, AU55
Beautiful Blue-Steel and Rose-Russet Coin

1796 10C JR-2, R.4, AU55 NGC. Blue-steel toning congregates towards the periphery, with rose-russet regions in the center and white-steel dominating the fields. Abrasions are minimal. Striking weakness is limited to the central bust on the obverse and the eagle's wings on the reverse, a pattern common on examples of this die marriage. The inaugural year of issue for the dime denomination contains seven die marriages, a record among Early dimes. The JR-2 is of medium rarity, and is neither common like the JR-1 or JR-6, nor extremely rare like the semi-unique JR-7. The 1796 is also one of two dates of the Small Eagle Reverse type, with the other being the much scarcer 1797. This, along with its first year of issue status and additional availability in high grades, makes the 1796 dime the ideal choice for type coin collectors. The choice surfaces of this coin similarly make it an excellent option.
