    Description

    1796 JR-2 Dime, Bright AU58
    Sharply Detailed First-Year Type Coin

1796 10C JR-2, R.4, AU58 NGC. Other than a small area of light wear on the eagle's breast, this near-Mint JR-2 dime is sharply detailed with bright silver-white coloration. The strike is even and well-centered, producing complete dentils around each perimeter. A small rim cud is seen above stars 7 and 8 on the obverse, and both sides exhibit extensive clash marks in the fields. Liberty's portrait shows almost no perceptible wear.

Although many varieties are known, the 1796 dime as a date is highly sought-after as the debut issue of this denomination. Pieces in the upper AU and the Mint State grades are elusive and always command strong bidder activity at auction. The present coin pleases on multiple levels.
