    Description

    1796 JR-2 Dime, MS62
    Late Die State, Satiny Luster

1796 10C JR-2, R.4, MS62 PCGS Secure. Dime coinage began at the infant Mint in January 1796, and it is believed that coins of this date were issued into early 1797. The authors of Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 (1984) believed that the JR-2 variety was likely part or all of a February 13th, 1796 delivery of this denomination. At the time of that writing, six die varieties were known, but a seventh was discovered in 2002 and is essentially uncollectible.

This Mint State JR-2 coin is in a late die state. The heavy clash marks occurred early in the dies' usage, but the rim crumbling above stars 7 and 8 is a late state diagnostic. The eagle's head and breast are predictably soft, and slight weakness from an uneven strike is visible along the upper-right obverse border. Tan-gold toning appears on both sides, along with unobtrusive abrasions that define the grade. An appealing first-year Draped Bust type coin.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
