1796 JR-2 Dime, MS66
Sharply Struck, Unabraded
Light to Medium Tan-Gold Toning
1796 10C JR-2, R.4, MS66 PCGS. CAC. A remarkable Premium
Gem. The strike is virtually complete, showing only a hint of
blending on the eagle's breast feathers. Liberty's hair shows
essentially full detail. The lustrous surfaces exhibit medium
chestnut-gold and cream-gray toning with glimpses of powder-blue,
aquamarine, and russet-brown on the obverse periphery. The surfaces
appear devoid of abrasions, although a few pinpoint flecks are
noted on the field near star 3. Both sides exhibit clash marks, but
the dies are otherwise perfect aside from a small break on the
dentils near stars 7.JR-2 is a scarce variety. The 1984 Dime Book states that JR-2 constitutes "about 5 to 10% of all 1796 dimes." JR-2 is the sole marriage for both the obverse and reverse dies. Thus, its emission order is indeterminate within 1796 production. The variety may have been the first produced that year, or possibly the last. Although disme patterns were struck in silver and copper in 1792 in John Harper's cellar, the dime denomination was not coined at the U.S. Mint until 1796, the year after the silver dollar, half dollar, and half dime were first produced.
The Draped Bust, Small Eagle type for the dime was struck for only two years, 1796 and 1797. The design was first introduced on the 1795 dollar (B-14 and B-15), and featured a bust of Liberty based on a painting of prominent Philadelphia socialite Ann Willing Bingham by the celebrated artist Gilbert Stuart. The reverse design was replaced with a large heraldic eagle beginning in 1798, but the Draped Bust obverse design lasted through 1807. No dimes were struck dated 1808, and in 1809, the dime was modified to correspond with other denominations bearing Assistant Engraver John Reich's Capped Bust Left motif. For all 1796 varieties, Population: 7 in 66, 2 finer (7/15).
