    Description

    1796 Draped Bust Dime, JR-2, VF25
    Highly Sought First-Year Issue

1796 10C JR-2, R.4, VF25 PCGS. Seven die marriages are known for the 1796 dime, the last one discovered after the JR book was published. The varieties are all scarce to rare, with the JR-2 variety a scarce R.4 but still among the most often-seen. The present example exhibits a high degree of detail for the grade, with notable definition among Liberty's hair locks and the reverse borders. The obverse displays pale pinkish-gray patina overall, while the reverse offers a steel-gray center with darker gray margins. Close inspection reveals some faint, old pinscratches on the obverse, primarily hidden in Liberty's hair locks, and some mint-made adjustment marks on the reverse above the eagle's head, but these are hardly noticeable to the unaided eye. A pleasing representative of this first type. (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38743, Base PCGS# 4461)
