    Description

    1796 Dime, AU50
    Rare JR-3 Die Marriage

1796 10C JR-3, R.5, AU50 PCGS. The JR reference suggests that only about 5% of all 1796 dimes are from the rare JR-3 die pair, which features an obverse with the first three digits of the date widely spaced, and the 6 squeezed close to the 9 and nearly touching the bust. The reverse shows a distinctive three-pronged die crack that runs from the edge along the top if the first T in STATES, as well as down along the left serif of T to the left branch and to the eagle's wing. A triangular cut above UN of UNITED is the result of a die chip that remained on the die, with the resulting cut now filled with dark build-up.

Sharp detail remains on both sides of this silver-gray example, with Liberty's hair strands boldly impressed and the eagle's breast feathers still visible. Faint golden-gray patina survives primarily at the margins. Fleeting glimpses of luster appear sparingly across both sides. A few stray lines and light marks exist primarily on the reverse. Housed in an old green label holder. (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38744, Base PCGS# 4461)
