Description
1796 JR-3 Dime, Fine Details
Scarce Die Variety
1796 10C JR-3, R.5 -- Obverse Graffiti -- NGC Details. Fine.
Ex: The John McCloskey Collection. JR-3 is rare because the reverse
die failed early. The present lot shows a retained cud break over
the first T in STATES, close to (but not quite) the terminal die
state with a full cud in the vicinity. The gunmetal-gray surfaces
are attractive except for a small X entered in the field below the
chin. A pod-shaped depression at 7 o'clock on the reverse appears
to be a flan flaw, as made.Ex: The John W. McCloskey Collection (Heritage, 2/2022), lot 45120.
