Description

1796 JR-6 Dime, AU53
Well-Struck and Attractively Toned

1796 10C JR-6, R.3, AU53 PCGS. The 1796 date is always in demand as the first year of regular issue federal dimes. Six die marriages combine to account for a reported 22,135-piece mintage. JR-1 is by far the most available variety, accounting for more than half of the 1796 production and at least 50% of all surviving 1796 dimes. This JR-6 example represents the second-most-available 1796 die pair, although it remains scarce in all grades. A heavily cracked obverse die shows die chipping along the numerous cracks, especially through the date and a long, curving crack from star 8 through Liberty's hair and neck to the rim below 9 in the date. This sharply struck dime retains bold definition throughout both sides. Semireflective fields display golden-gray toning and blue accents, with only minimal abrasions. A few short adjustment marks at the upper-right obverse rim extend into TY of LIBERTY and two adjacent stars, but no further. Soft Mint luster remains beneath the toning for strong eye appeal.
