    Description

    1796 JR-6 Dime, MS63
    High-Grade Early Type Coin

1796 10C JR-6, R.3, MS63 PCGS. This coin represents the first year of dime production at the United States Mint. The Draped Bust and Small Eagle motifs originated on 1795 silver dollars and were adapted for the dime in 1796. Technically, the 1796 15 Stars dime is a single-year subtype, since the 1797 issue has either 16 (JR-1) or 13 (JR-2) stars. This satiny, stone-gray representative displays a small dab of russet color right of the D in UNITED, and the obverse shows several parallel, slender, and toned alloy streaks (mint made). The strike is sharp for the type.

A spectacular assemblage of die cracks is seen, including a horizontal break through the 17 in the date, and a slender crack through star 8 to the center of Liberty's neck that splits into two cracks descending to the rim at 5:30 and 6 o'clock. On the reverse, a crack from 10:30 proceeds through the eagle to the M in AMERICA, a vertical crack runs from the ribbon to the eagle's breast, a crack extends through the bases of OF AMER, and another connects the rim to the M in AMERICA. Population (all varieties included): 15 in 63, 25 finer (5/18).
    Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2014), lot 5559, which realized $32,900; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2015), lot 4058, which realized $23,500. (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38747, Base PCGS# 4461)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
