    Description

    1796 Draped Bust Dime, JR-2, MS61
    First Year Of Denomination

1796 10C MS61 NGC. JR-2, R.4. The dime denomination was introduced as a regular issue in 1796, although a few pattern dismes had been struck in 1792. A mintage of 22,135 pieces was accomplished, with six die varieties known for the date. The present coin represents the scarce JR-2 variety, with a low 6 in the date, and star 15 barely touching the bust.
This impressive MS61 piece is sharply detailed in most areas, but some of the stars are flat, and the eagle's head and breast are softly impressed. Clash marks are evident on both sides. The surfaces retain much original mint luster and display attractive ice-blue and silver-gray toning. This lot will be the object of intense competition among first-year type collectors and early dime specialists. Census: 4 in 61, 78 finer (12/10).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236B, PCGS# 4461)

    Weight: 2.70 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
