    Description

    1796 Dime, MS62, JR-6
    Bold Obverse Die Crack

Piquant Example of Early Mint Coinage

1796 10C MS62 NGC. JR-6, R.3. It was 1796, in the Mint's fourth calendar year of operation, before it finally got around to striking the dime denomination. Seven varieties are known (one currently unique), of which six are enumerated in the "dime book." The JR-6 variety is easily recognized by its obverse, which shows a bold transverse die crack in the date and none of the letters in LIBERTY touching. The reverse shows a berry southwest of the upright of the E in UNITED, and a leaf tip is near the left side of the last T. Another prominent die crack runs from the rim through the eagle's left (facing) wing to the central breast area.

This MS62 example shows some parallel grayish striations in the planchet, intermingled with the prevailing golden hues in the fields and pinkish tints at the rims. Much eye appeal is present on this piece, which amply demonstrates the piquant character of much of the early Mint coinage.
