    Description

    Conditionally Scarce Near-Gem 1796 Dime, JR-4

1796 10C MS64 NGC. JR-4, R.4. TY touch on this variety, and star 1 is far from the hair curls. On the reverse there are two berries under the upright of the first E, and the leaf tip is under the right side of the first A.
The first U.S. issue of dimes (or "dismes") occurred in this year, with a reported mintage of 22,135 pieces delivered between January 18 and May 27, from five obverse and four reverse dies in six combinations. The consistently high quality of this premier issue has repeatedly been remarked upon, and history indicates that 1796 dimes were frequently given as presentation pieces to visiting dignitaries at the Philadelphia Mint.
This conditionally scarce near-Gem shows lovely electric-blue toning near the peripheries, and rich purple-brown coloration in the central regions. The strike is very even and quite crisp. Liberty's hair detail is meticulously sculpted, with each strand outlined and clear. The vertical line that marks the iris of Liberty's eye is plain, and there is bold contradistinction between the hair and the forehead. On the reverse, the eagle's breast and wings show pleasing feather detail. The two sides display noticeable die clash marks in the field areas, but are essentially free of mentionable distractions from any occurrence after the date of production.
The discerning specialist will recognize this coin, with a winning combination of high technical merit and superior visual appeal, as a rare find and a significant bidding opportunity.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236B, PCGS# 4461)
