Description

Scarce 1796 Half Dime, JR-5, Choice XF

1796 10C XF45 PCGS. JR-5, R.5. The obverse is identified by a close Liberty and the position of star 1, which touches the second hair curl. On the reverse, there are two berries below the upright of the E in UNITED, and a leaf tip is located under the right side of the A in STATES. According to Early United States Dimes, 1796-1837, JR-5 is the rarest 1796 variety and accounts for less than 5% of this date's appearance on the market.
The present piece is boldly struck (except for MERIC and the right obverse stars) and lightly circulated, with a lovely original appearance. A few faint adjustment marks are noted on the obverse, but these are nearly imperceptible without a loupe. Several shallow scratches are noted on the reverse. An evenly worn and well-struck example that boasts an attractive obverse for the grade. Housed in a green label PCGS holder.
