Description

PCGS 1796 MS 65. JR-1, R.3. Easily attributed by the die cud at star 1, on this piece in the earlier stages and not really running down the rim beyond the star. Several years ago a small hoard of 1796 dimes entered the market and this increased the availability of this date overall by a substantial margin. However, to our knowledge there were no gems in this hoard. This is a very significant coin for the specialist or anyone interested in U.S. type.
This is a magnificent specimen that is sharply struck in the center of the obverse, the reverse, however, shows slight softness on the eagle's breast with a few very shallow adjustment marks. Essentially untoned with a lustrous silvery-gray patina. There are traces of light die clashing in the fields on each side, these being the only ripples in the surface of this impressive coin that we can see. This is the only 65 certified by PCGS and it has been so recently graded that it does not show on the June Report. Only exceeded by one coin, an MS 67. (NGC ID# 236B, PCGS# 4461)

    Weight: 2.70 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
