    1797 Draped Bust Dime, XF40
    Elusive 13 Stars, JR-2 Variety

1797 10C 13 Stars XF40 PCGS. CAC. JR-2, R.4. The 1797 Draped Bust dime is an underrated issue, much more difficult to locate than its mintage of 25,261 pieces would suggest. Researchers believe 10,244 pieces of the reported mintage were actually dated 1796, explaining the relative scarcity of the 1797 issue. The 1796 and 1797 Draped Bust dimes represent a short-lived design type, as they are the only dates to feature the Small Eagle reverse. Two die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the scarcer JR-2 variety, with 13 obverse stars instead of the 16 star motif used on JR-1.

The present coin is an attractive XF specimen that retains much of its original design detail and mint luster. The lightly abraded surfaces are blanketed in shades of champagne-gold and lavender-blue patina, with outstanding eye appeal. The 1797 Draped Bust dime is especially elusive in high grade. Population: 1 in 40, 9 finer (1/14).
