    Description

    1797 Draped Bust Dime, AU50
    16 Stars, Pointed 9, JR-1

1797 10C 16 Stars, JR-1, R.4, AU50 PCGS. Variety JR-1 has a 16 star obverse and a Pointed 9 in the date. The additional star represents Tennessee's entry into the Union and was only used to strike a limited number of coins in 1797, making it a single-year type. This middle die state example features a sizeable die break at the lower obverse from the rim below star 2 to the rim in front of Liberty's bust. The Small Eagle reverse was last used in 1797, when 25,261 dimes were reportedly struck at the Mint. That figure likely includes an unknown number of coins dated 1796. Around 200 or so examples are believed extant in all grades.

This pleasing AU representative displays even steel and violet-gray patina with splashes of bluish-green coloration. Liberty's hair strands are razor-sharp, as are the eagle's wing and breast feathers despite a touch of friction. Several stars are recut and show inconsequential softness. The overall appeal is unquestionable. Population: 5 in 50, 18 finer (4/16). (NGC ID# 236C, Variety PCGS# 38748, Base PCGS# 4462)
