    Description

    1797 16 Stars Dime, JR-1, VG8
    Rich Original Patina

1797 10C 16 Stars, JR-1, R.4, VG8 NGC. The admission of Tennessee to the Union in 1796 brought about the addition of a 16th star to the obverse of the dime, though it quickly became apparent that so many stars crowded the design, so the Mint reverted to placing only 13 stars on the obverse later in the year (symbolic of the 13 original colonies). This piece is representative of the earlier 16 star obverse variety. Moderate wear is seen over each side, with the reverse borders being weak. Original olive-gray patina blankets the surfaces, complementing a lack of adjustment marks. The date is weak, a result of a die break over the left-hand numerals. (NGC ID# 236C, Variety PCGS# 38748, Base PCGS# 4462)
