    Description

    1798/7 Dime, Small 8 Over Large 7, JR-2, MS62
    Rarest Variety for the Year
    Well Within the Condition Census

1798/97 10C 13 Stars on Reverse MS62 PCGS. CAC. JR-2, R.6. Small 8 over large 7. The two 1798/7 dime varieties were struck from a single obverse displaying a clearly visible overdate feature that can be easily seen without magnification. The obverse of every example we know of also shows extremely heavy clash marks.

This is the rarest variety for 1798, and the present example is solidly in the Condition Census, perhaps second-finest known behind the Ed Price coin. One of the interesting features on the reverse of this variety is the distinctive star pattern. Five stars appear in the top row, five in the middle row, one on each side of the eagle's head, and a central star above the head that seems to belong to neither of the two rows.

The Ed Price Collection coin certified MS63, the present MS62, and the Lovejoy-Logan AU58 coin plated in the JR dime book are the three finest examples we know of, although the current NGC and PCGS population data suggest that one or two other similar-quality pieces may exist. The combined population includes: MS63, MS62 (4), MS61, AU58 (2), AU55, AU50, XF45, and a few lower-grade coins.

The surfaces offer muted silver-gray patina overall accented by deeper olive-green and a bit of light copper color surrounding the devices and peripheries. The strike is a bit soft in the centers, and a sprinkling of minor abrasions is consistent with the grade. An excellent opportunity for the dime collectors.
