Description

Astonishing 1798/97 Dime, MS66
16 Stars Reverse, JR-1

1798/97 10C 16 Stars on Reverse MS66 NGC. JR-1, R.3. The small 8 in the date is punched over a substantially larger 7 underdigit, with a corner protruding from the top right of the 8. On the reverse, a small die crack runs from star 10 to the eagle's head. Both sides are from later die states. The obverse die shows clashing that was subsequently lapped, and various details on the obverse are weak or nonexistent, most notably at Liberty's outer curls and her shoulder. This coin does not show the clashing through the date and on the reverse that distinguishes near-terminal specimens, though it does display remnants of an earlier clash in the right obverse field.
This is the second of just three NGC-graded MS66 examples for the variety that Heritage has offered (the first being the specimen we offered in August 2006 at Denver), with no Premium Gems certified by PCGS and no coins finer known at either service (3/09). Each side offers strong, slightly frosty luster with primarily pale silver-gray surfaces that show glimpses of champagne-gold close to the margins. The coin is a trifle softly struck at the central reverse, but it is generally well-defined elsewhere. It is also astonishingly well-preserved for an 18th century product, with only the tiniest of marks scattered in the fields and virtually no flaws visible on the devices. The early dime enthusiast would do well to give careful consideration to this captivating coin.
