Description
1798/97 JR-1 Dime, MS64
16 Stars Reverse, CAC Endorsed
1798/97 10C 16 Stars Reverse, JR-1, R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. The
Mint's diecutter shoehorned 16 field stars surrounding the eagle's
head on the reverse, while partially obscuring a tall 7 underdigit
with a small 8 in the date on the obverse. The reverse die was
previously used to strike 1797 BD-1 quarter eagles, making the
1798/97 JR-1 dime variety the first of the ten cent Heraldic Eagle
reverse design. The obverse die is shared with the rare 1798/97
JR-2 dime, which features 13 field stars in a more conventional
line star pattern. Steel-blue and peach-gold toning decorate the
frosty near-Gem surfaces on this CAC-endorsed JR-1 example. A
small, medium-gray toning spot above the top hair ribbon identifies
this Choice Uncirculated coin. Sharply struck and well-centered
motifs offer softly lustrous, original eye appeal. PCGS Population:
12 in 64, 7 finer (8/25). CAC: 3 in 64, 2 finer.From The Hawkeye Collection.
