    Description

    1800 Dime, JR-1, AU58
    Late Reverse Die State

1800 10C AU58 PCGS. CAC. JR-1, R.4. According to the JR dime book, the split between the two varieties of the year, JR-1 and JR-2, is about 60:40 in favor of the present JR-1. This near-Mint State example shows the diagnostic small dot or die lump over the lowest curl; a closely spaced, uneven LIBERTY, with LI and RT closer than the other letter pairs; and the date spaced 1 800, with a dot between the 1 and 8. The 13 star reverse shows the star in three well-arranged arcs of five, six, and two stars; and the eagle's beak is free of a star (diagnostic, as the eagle chomps on a star on the other JR-2 reverse).

Copious luster remains under a light patina of steel-gray accented with gold and pale ice-blue notes. A couple of small brilliant areas appear in the left obverse field under the ribbon and left of the lower curls. The reverse shows a couple of small marks and a long, curved strike-through, as made at the Mint, curving from star 4 through clouds 4 and 5 and back to star 6, apparently a curved piece of metal lying on the die at the time of striking. A rim cud runs from the reverse rim at 9:30-10 to join the eagle's second-highest feather.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 236H, PCGS# 4470)
