    Description

    1801 JR-1 Dime, AU55
    Two Elusive Varieties Known

1801 10C AU55 PCGS. CAC. JR-1, R.4. The less rare of only two die marriages known for this elusive date, JR-1 is identified by the prominently "rusted" reverse field, as made. Most survivors are well-worn; according to the standard John Reich Collectors Society reference, "Of highest rarity in MS-60 (not more than two known)." Luminous honey-tinged luster forms a band across LIBERTY and all obverse stars, and luster dominates Liberty's hair. On the reverse, luster is not far from complete, broken only on the exposed field. This lightly toned piece is surprisingly unabraded; a couple of tiny aqua or golden-brown spots on the upper obverse are trivial. The strike is typical on the central reverse, but the devices are crisply detailed elsewhere. Population: 2 in 55, 4 finer (9/11).
    Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2005), lot 6364, which brought $10,350.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236J, PCGS# 4471)
