    Description

    1801 JR-1 Dime, AU50
    High-Grade Rarity

1801 10C JR-1, R.4, AU50 PCGS. The 1801 dime was reportedly struck to the extent of 34,640 coins. Breen wrote in his 1988 Complete Encyclopedia, "The date 1801 is the least rare of the 1800-4 group in worn condition, but both vars. are Ex. rare in VF or higher grades, and in mint state so rare that their existence was long controversial." Varieties JR-1 and JR-2 share a common obverse and are distinguished by the size of the A in STATES. The JR-1 or Wide A variant is more available than its counterpart, though only 200 to 250 pieces are believed extant, and they prove very rare this fine.

All 1801 dimes were struck from pitted dies, explaining the lackluster appearance of even high-grade examples. Design detail on this piece is typical for the issue. Each problem-free side features golden-gray hues with minimally distracting abrasions. An impressive AU Draped Bust dime that will be exceedingly difficult to improve upon. Population (both varieties): 4 in 50, 8 finer (4/16). (NGC ID# 236J, Variety PCGS# 38756, Base PCGS# 4471)
