Description

    1801 JR-2 Dime, MS62
    Outstanding Early Mint Rarity

1801 10C MS62 NGC. JR-2, R.5. Only two varieties are known for the 1801 dimes, the very scarce JR-1 and the rare JR-2. This variety is most easily distinguished by the leaf tip overlapping the right base of the I in AMERICA and the die crack from the E in AMERICA to the shield. Although the JR-2 is usually found well worn and with various defects, the present piece shows few distractions other than those it left the Mint with. The rust pits near the face and throat in the right (facing) obverse field are characteristic of all examples. Liberty's hair curls are well-defined, but there is some softness on the eagle's plumage in the central reverse. Satiny mint luster shines brightly through the light golden-rose toning that covers each side. A swath of bright cobalt-blue appears above the date. An outstanding example of this early Mint rarity. Census: 1 in 62, 2 finer (6/12).
Ex: Joseph C. Thomas Collection / Cincinnati Central States (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 2215, which brought $29,900.
