1802 10C JR-2, R.5, MS62 PCGS....
Description
1802 JR-2 Ten Cent, MS62
Among the Finest-Known 1802 Dimes
Tied Finest on the Condition Census
1802 10C JR-2, R.5, MS62 PCGS. A reported 10,975-piece
mintage ranks the 1802 dime among the scarcer early dime issues.
While the possibility exists that some additional 1802-dated pieces
may have been struck in late 1801 or early 1803, from a practical
perspective the low surviving population of only 175 to 225 pieces
makes the actual mintage a moot point. Four die varieties exist,
ranging from the extremely rare JR-1, with only two known examples,
to the more common JR-4 die marriage, which is seen most often.
Both the JR-2 and JR-3 die pairs are considered rare. This coin
represents the challenging JR-2 die pair utilizing the JR-1 obverse
and a reverse die with the O in OF far distant from the final S in
STATES. Field star 12 is clear of the eagle's upper beak and almost
touches the lower beak, but not quite. On the obverse, stars 3 and
4 are distant compared to the other stars. Virtually all 1802 dimes
are circulated to one extent or another, making any Mint State
example an early dime prize. Only four certified 1802 examples top
the combined Condition Census for all 1802 varieties and none are
finer. Of the four MS62 pieces, two coins represent the JR-2
variety. The other two MS62 coins are the more common JR-4 variety.
The record auction price for an 1802 dime is the Ex:
Menjou-Bareford-Lovejoy-Price-Pogue coin, which realized $138,000
when Heritage sold the Ed Price Collection in July 2008.This present exceptional 1802 dime is a relatively new addition to the list of finest-known Mint State examples. It serves as the current PCGS CoinFacts plate coin for 1802 dimes. Reflective surfaces glisten beneath deep azure-blue and ivory-gold obverse toning, while the semiprooflike reverse adds amber-gold accents. The strike is far sharper than expected for a JR-2 example. Likewise, this coin stands out within the entire 1802 dime Condition Census for its central sharpness and overall eye appeal. Satiny silver luster resides beneath attractive border toning and illuminates the frosted raised devices. An interesting late die state shows obverse die clashing above and below the bust -- unseen on other high-grade JR-2 examples. The usual shattered reverse includes multiple bold die cracks that contribute to softness at the lower-right (facing) wing/shield junction. Among all high-grade JR-2 examples viewed, only Ed Price's AU55 NGC JR-2 example displayed a similar late die state. To our knowledge, the present coin has not appeared at public auction in some 35 years. PCGS Population: 4 in 62, 0 finer (8/25).
