    1802 JR-2 Dime, MS62
    The Finest Known Specimen

1802 10C MS62 PCGS Secure. JR-2, R.5. Four die varieties are known for the 1802 dimes, and two are scarce, one is rare, and another is unique. Likely only about 250 to 300 1802 dimes survive in all grades and most are well worn.

Five years ago when we offered the Ed Price Collection of early dimes and quarter eagles, we described his MS61 NGC example of the 1802 JR-2 dime as the finest known specimen, and wrote that we are unaware of any other Mint State 1802 dimes of any variety except JR-4. Now we have the opportunity to offer an even finer example, a coin that was previously unknown to us and the new finest known specimen.

This piece is a later die state than the Price coin with a small triangular rim break just above the first A in AMERICA, outside the second feather in the right facing wing. The Price coin had a retained cud at that location with the dentil still visible. The weakness of strike on the Price coin is typical of that die state, while earlier and later pieces such as this example always have a better strike.

The forehead and face are weak on this example, while on the Price coin it is still flatter at those areas. The same is true of the opposing locations on the reverse. Both sides have satin luster with exceptional patina showing delightful gold and blue toning with extraordinary eye appeal. A few scattered surface marks are consistent with the grade. Population: 3 in 62, 0 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 236K, PCGS# 4472)
