    1802 Capped Bust Dime, VF20
The Scarce and Unusual JR-4 Die Pairing

1802 10C VF20 ANACS. JR-4, R.4. Dove-gray patination covers the surfaces of this scarce Draped Bust dime. The low mintage of 10,985 pieces is divided between four very scarce to rare die marriages. This variety is indicated by the tip of the back wave of Liberty's hair and located under the curves of the B in LIBERTY. JR-4 is also recognized by the placement of star 8, further from the Y than on any other variety of the date. Another diagnostic is the lowest reverse star, which touches both tips of the eagle's beak. Striking weakness in the centers is characteristic for the variety. This example is weak on the reverse at the center, but surrounding detail is much stronger. The obverse also demonstrates some central weakness of strike, but it is strong at the margins.

The reverse of this die pairing is among the more famous and illustrious in early U.S. numismatics, having been used not only for the 1802 JR-4 and 1804 JR-1 die marriages among dimes, and also on the 1802 BD-2 and 1804 BD-1 pairings among the quarter eagle denomination. Thus, it is a "dual denomination" reverse die.(Registry values: P7)
