    Description

Very Late Die State 1803 JR-3 Dime

1803 10C JR-3, R.4. Reiver state b.--Environmental Damage--NCS. VG Details. The environmental damage seems to consist of scattered specks on the obverse and reverse, and there are some minor faint pin scratches on both sides. Light steel gray overall, with darker specks as mentioned. This is a wonderfully late die state of this variety, the obverse has shattered through the date, with an arcing die crack from the rim through the 3 and Liberty to the fourth star, a heavier die crack splits the 0 of the date and curls around to the first star, and this die section has sunk forming a retained cud. A third die crack splits the retained cud from the rim to Liberty's lowest curl. On the reverse, there is a die crack through the T of UNITED to the eagle's wing, just missing the lower point of the ribbon. Minor die clashing on the reverse in the star field from Liberty's bust line. While not the prettiest little coin, this one has die state charms that are hard beat, and is perhaps one of the latest examples seen of this variety.
