    Description

    1804 Dime, JR-1, Thirteen Stars, AU55 Sharpness
JR Plate Coin and Among Finest Known

1804 10C 13 Stars on Reverse--Scratched--ANACS. AU55 Details. JR-1, R.5. This is an extraordinary and extraordinarily well-provenanced example of this rare variety. It last appeared as lot 1595 in ANR's March 2005 sale of the Richard Jewell collection, uncertified and graded AU55 with light scratches. The excellent description from that auction reads, in part:

"Luminous bright silver gray with subtle peripheral toning on the obverse consisting of mostly golden tones while the reverse shows even more delicate peripheral toning, highlighted by an area of pale blue over AMERICA. Two parallel old scratches cross the portrait, one leaving the right obverse field at Liberty's eye and the other crossing her lips below, and short tails of them are clear behind her hair. These scratches were described almost every time the coin has sold since Parmelee, and their notice in that 1890 catalogue enable us to accurately connect this coin with one of the finest pedigrees in all of numismatics. Some light hairlines and a thin diagonal scratch through the star cluster are also noted. This coin boasts one of the finest strikes seen on an 1804 dime, with a fully detailed portrait bust of Liberty and ideal definition on the eagle. This coin was fine enough to serve to represent the variety in no less than three of the great dime collections--Bareford, Lovejoy, and Bolen--not to mention the great comprehensive cabinets formed by Parmelee and Newcomer."

Indeed, the assigned details grade for this coin may be on the conservative side, as a mere touch of wear can be seen on the high points of Liberty's bustline and the eagle's head. A good deal of luster remains, granting this piece the eye appeal that must have drawn so many renowned collectors to own it over the last hundred-plus years. Clearly, it is among the finest known of the variety, since the major grading service have certified no Thirteen Stars dimes in Mint State and only three in any AU grade. By becoming the high bidder on this storied coin, you have the opportunity to follow in some rarefied numismatic footsteps.
