    1804 JR-1 Dime, 13 Stars Reverse, XF45
Exceptional Surfaces and Color for the Grade

1804 10C 13 Stars Reverse, JR-1, R.5, XF45 PCGS. Two varieties of 1804 have different star counts on the reverse, with 13 Stars on the JR-1 and 14 Stars on the JR-2. Sometimes called the "Needle Beak," the eagle's lower beak is long and straight, extending entirely through the adjacent star on the JR-1 variety. The two 1804 varieties are each rare, and both are condition rarities in the series. The Draped Bust dimes of 1801 through 1804 are elusive dates that provide collectors with a major hurdle, although the three earlier dates require much less effort to locate.

This Choice XF example combines pewter-gray surfaces with lovely reddish-gold and pale-blue toning and a generous amount of remaining mint luster. The well-defined surfaces show just light abrasions, and a tiny reverse rim bruise at 6 o'clock causes no real distraction. Only a few other scattered marks are evident. The finest JR-1 PCGS-certified pieces include: XF45 (3), AU53 (2), and AU55 (2). That service has never examined a Mint State piece, and has only seen four submissions finer than the present specimen. The NGC Census Report tells a similar tale, with a single amazing MS63 coin. Others include: XF45 (2) and AU55 (2). Those totals include possible resubmissions (5/16). Spirited bidding is expected when collectors compete for this coin.
    Ex: Superior (7/2005), lot 952; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3135 which realized $46,000. (NGC ID# 236N, Variety PCGS# 38766, Base PCGS# 4474)

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
