    Description

    1805 JR-2 Dime, CAC-Approved MS64
    Four Berries Reverse Type Coin

1805 10C 4 Berries, JR-2, R.2, MS64 PCGS. CAC. JR-2 is distinctive for having only four berries on the reverse olive branch. As most design features during this period were entered into the die by hand, this variety has numerous other differences from the scarcer JR-1 die pairing, but the berry count is the most significant as it separates JR-2 as a unique Guide Book variety.

The obverse die crack from the rim through ERTY is well-documented in all references, although less attention is paid to the heavy clash marks that are seen on both sides in this late die state. The most prominent clash runs through the right-side reverse stars into the ribbon at UNUM. A heavy die line from star 10 in that region and small rust lumps around it give the impression of a die crack to the untrained eye, although no such defect is documented for this reverse. Other, more prominent rust lumps are visible near the D in UNITED.

This is a lustrous, frosty near-Gem, with silver surfaces lightly tinged with gold. Liberty's portrait is well-defined, but the eagle, shield, and numerous stars are incompletely struck, with parallel roller marks (mint-made) visible on the reverse, not fully struck out of the planchet. Population: 28 in 64 (2 in 64+), 19 finer. CAC: 7 in 64, 8 finer (1/18).
