Description

1805 Dime, Colorfully Toned MS62
5 Berries, JR-1, Elusive in Mint State

1805 10C 5 Berries, JR-1, R.4, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Eugene Gardner purchased this coin from Harry Laibstain in 2013, attracted by variety's scarcity in Mint State as well as the attractive, original surfaces. Only two varieties exist for the year, the 5 Berries JR-1 and the 4 Berries JR-2. The two reverses share a common obverse. The 5 Berries die pair is about twice as rare overall as the 4 Berries, and it is accordingly scarce. Pastel patina drapes the obverse in a colorful display of pearl-gray at the centers with concentric olive, fuchsia, violet, and ice-blue moving toward the rims, accompanied by tinges of orange and amber. The reverse toning is more demure, featuring intermingled aqua, walnut, and gray hues. One thin hairline mark hides in the toning about midway through the lower bust and the central strike is a bit on the soft side. Regardless, the eye appeal is top-notch. PCGS Population: 3 in 62, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 0 finer (2/25).
